We will ditch the bikes after 3 weeks in the saddle in France and hire a car in Barcelona and spend 6 weeks on a road trip.
Our plan is to cruise down the coast to Granada and Seville, then spend a couple of weeks in Portugal before heading back into the interior of Spain, up to San Sebastian and then back across to Barcelona.

Costa Brava – October 1st – 4th
We hit the road and ventured North of Barcelona to Costa Brava. We found some lovely beach towns.

Benicassim
We reconnected with Frank and Veronica who were great friends when we lived in Denmark 30 years ago! What a fabulous couple of days. They live in Andorra but have a wonderful pad in Veronica’s old stomping ground.

Ronda and Seville – October 10th – 12th
We picked up Lars and Derya and quickly headed away from Malaga inland.Ronda and Seville are both amazing places. The landscape and buildings in Ronda to the magnificent architecture in Seville.

Granada
We continued our road trip with Lars and Derya to Granada – another absolute gem!Dominating the sky line is the Alhambra. A magnificent setting, buildings and gardens.

Granada is certainly more than just Alhambra – it is a wonderful city to walk and enjoy the old town.

Cominito del Rey
A must visit in the region is this walk around the cliffs that was developed back in the early 20th century for the workers who were building a hydro dam. It is an awesome walk not for the faint hearted!

Sadly we had to say goodbye to Lars and Derya who headed back home to Bath. Lars scored some fancy Ray Ban Meta Smart glasses in Spain – complete with camera and his new friend Meta who can tell Lars all sorts of useful information! We actually thought Lars looked like Superman!
Farewell time
PORTUGAL – October 17th
We dropped Lars and Derya at Malaga Airport then headed for Tavira in Portugal. First time in Portugal for Helle and I so super excited! I got to the border of Portugal in 1986 but was turned away as I had no visa. This time there is no border! You just keep driving and suddenly you are in Portugal.

Lisbon October 24th – 26th
First impression of Lisbon is that it is somewhat rundown – let’s be kind and call it rustic charm!

Aviera Oct 29th
We stayed in Costa Nova just over the water from Aviera. A top little holiday destination with houses painted mainly red and blue stripes.

Our favourite city in Portugal. Set around the Duoro River it has wonderful buildings, colour and a top vibe.

Saojo – Nov 3rd – 5th
We headed inland to the Peneda Geres National Park. Very few tourists visit and Saojo is a charming hillside village full of tiny streets and granite houses.

Saint Martin del Castañar- Nov 6th
We left Portugal and drove back into Spain to a lovely little village – Saint Martin del Castañar.

Madrid – Nov 7th – 10th
We headed to the Spanish capital via Salamanca- a very impressive University and cathedral.

Madrid – what a wonderful city! We have walked 30 kms in 2 days exploring all the hot spots. This has to be my favourite big city in Spain.
The architecture, the scale and grandness of the buildings, plazas and parks is just awe-inspiring.

Toledo Nov 10th
1 hour south of Madrid is the famed ” holy Toledo” – no idea why or if there is a connection. But it’s a fortified town from centuries ago.

We stayed enroute in Zaragoza.Not much going for it except an exceptional Cathedral.
Our last stop before getting back to Barcelona was Zaragoza.

So after 6000 kms and 6 weeks on the road we finally got back to where we started – Barcelona.

After 3 1/2 months away it’s time to head home to a NZ summer. We are looking forward to seeing family, friends, heading to the beach, seeing Frankie and organizing our next 3 months away in 2025! ADIOS for now.
